What is Vexillology?
Vexillology is the study of flags — their history, symbolism, and design. Learn why it matters and how to get started.
Vexillology (from Latin vexillum, meaning flag) is the scholarly study of flags and related symbols. A practitioner of vexillology is called a vexillologist. The field covers the history, symbolism, design, and usage of flags across nations, organisations, and movements. The North American Vexillological Association (NAVA) published five key principles for good flag design: simplicity, meaningful symbolism, two or three basic colours, no lettering or seals, and distinctiveness.
